How to Measure a Door Opening in mm
Width, height, rebate depth and floor clearance. The four numbers we ask for before we cut a leaf.

Tools
- Steel tape (metric).
- Notepad or phone notes.
- Optional: spirit level to spot a skewed frame.
Four numbers we need
- Width: measure the clear opening width at top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest figure in mm.
- Height: measure left and right from finished floor to underside of head. Record the smallest.
- Rebate / frame depth: thickness of the frame that will receive the leaf, if reusing a frame.
- Wall thickness: useful when ordering new frames and architraves.
Swing and ironmongery
Stand on the side where the door pulls toward you. Note hinge side (left or right) and whether the door must open in or out. Photograph the existing lock face and hinges. For frames and locks see door frames and accessories.
Common Kenyan sizes
Interior leaves often land near 762 × 2032 mm or 838 × 2032 mm. Main doors are frequently 900 × 2100 mm. Never order from a neighbour's size. Openings move when floors are screeded or tiles added.
